地球はどんな生活の場？「スペースシャトル地球号」

これから述べるのは今思いついたというより、ずっと考えてきたことである。
地球以外の星で生きるのは、チャレンジか地球は住みづらいからかよくわからないが、チャレンジされている。人間が今までにないことをやりたいという好奇心でやるのは、財の分配を押さえた上ならよいだろう。
大事なのは、この地上でどれだけの人がどれだけ生活できるかだと思う。わが豊中市がアジェンダ２１と称して、1999年に市の行政計画である「豊中市環境基本計画」と車の両輪のように一緒に動かしていくための市民行動計画として「豊中アジェンダ21」が立ち上げられた。その前から私は環境問題に興味を持っていて、Biopsphereに関わる本をよく見ていた。この会の名前をどうするかと委員の中で公募があり、私は「スペースシャトル地球号」を提案した。採用されなかった。意味するところはこうである。

地球は限られた空間、限られた資源で、多くの生物が食物連鎖をもって生きている。そしてその生物はこの限られた空間や資源に影響を与え、平衡を保っている。生物がホメオスターシス(恒常性)を保つと同じように、地球は自然の大きな変動による影響を受けながらも恒常性を保ち、地球の歴史から見たら短いとはいえ、人類が続いている。
自然の影響は今後もあるだろうが、人間の営みが地球に影響を与えていることは間違いない。気体の環境変化、排せつ物、ゴミによる変化は狭いスペースシャトルでは大きな環境変化を与える。同様に人類が地球上で、どれくらいこの恒常性を乱さないで生きられるかは、その人類の生活程度によって大きく影響を受けることは当然である。自然物を使って、それが使いづらくなったら捨てても自然に帰るなら良い。私たちが今抜け出せない、加工された環境に生きていると、捨てるものも自然に帰るのは難しくなるのは当然である。つまりどれくらいの人が恒常性を乱さず、地球号に住めるかは、どのような生活をするかによって変わってくるだろう。つまり、いわゆる文明人がどれだけ住めるかということと、厳しい自然を受け入れながら自然とともに生きていく人間がどれだけ住めるかは全く違うということである。つまり自然と共存して無駄を少なくして生きる環境で１０００人生きられる状況では、文明を享受して、エネルギーも食物も衣類を含めた物品を好き勝手に使っている人が１００人さえ暮らせないだろうということである。

自然を壊さないための商品が「売り」に出されている。エネルギーでは、最近脱炭素→水素、またポリの混紡を生かした新たな商品など、日々テレビをにぎわわせている。しかし水素を作るために、ポリの混紡を生かした新しい商品を生み出すために、どれくらいのエネルギーや排水など生むかを表には出していない。
どのくらいの人がどの程度の生活環境で恒常的に生きられるかを考えるのでなく、介護力を保つには、また生産力を保つには少子化はまずい、産めよ増やせよだという程度の議論では先は持たない。コロナ禍で経済活動か病床の逼迫を含めた医療状況かというバランスと似たような比較しかされていない気がしてならない。
いつもスペースシャトル地球号は日々汚染され続けていることをいつも考えて生活することは、裏のデータをきちんと手に入れて評価しながら、私自身に対しても、そしてすべての人に対しても警告を発し続けなければならない。

What does the Earth “The space shuttle EARTH” mean as life space

What I’m going to talk about is what I’ve been thinking about for a long time. Trying  to live on planets other than the Earth is challenged. Is it because the Earth is becoming a difficult place to live?  Anyway, the challenge should be carried out as far as not only from the curiosity but also with consideration for the adequate distribution of goods.

I think the most important thing is how many people can live on the Earth with each satisfaction. My hometown Toyonaka city launched a project called “Toyonaka City Environmental Basic Plan in 1999. This project coordinate with a citizen action plan,  “Agenda 21” like one of two wheels. I originally have been interested in environmental issues and often read books on Biospheres. There was a public offering to decide the name of this project, “Agenda 21”, then I proposed the name “The space shuttle EARTH”. Although this name was not adopted, what I meant was as follows;

The earth has limited space and limited resources. The living world(organisms) is in a fine balance, with food chain, influencing on the space, nature, resources.

Like those organisms, the Earth has kept homeostasis despite being affected by the great changes in nature. Although short in the history of the Earth, humankind has still continued by now.

Of course, the changes of nature will continue, but there is no doubt that human activities are affecting the earth. Environmental changes in gases, excrement, and waste matters give a significant impact in the narrow space shuttle. Like this how long human can live on the Earth depends on how human lives on the Earth. Tons of processed goods can be wasted when it becomes inconvenient as far as they  finally return to nature.

The problem is that we use a lot of processed product which cannot easily return to nature.

The point is, how many people can live in “The space shuttle EARTH” without disturbing this homeostasis depends on how human live on the Earth.  Our present, new  way of life is completely different from the natura, old way of life which accept the harshness of the nature. Imagine 1000 people coexisting with nature. And imagine 100 people enjoying civilization, freely using goods(ex:clothing), energy and food. It is easy to know that even 100 people will not be able to live for the space originally for 1000 people.

Environmentally friendly goods are sold everywhere. Talk about energies, for example, decarbonization is in trend, but most people do not know that how much energy and water are used to produce hydrogen. Polyester clothes are also recycled into new polyester goods though used energy or water is not informed.

Similar phenomena are noticed. There is no future for the Earth if we aim to increase the number of births in order to maintain long-term care or productivity. This is very like today’s Coronavirus Crisis. The Japanese government has only an idea of an extreme comparison between economic activity and the tightness of medical care.

Remember that “The space shuttle EARTH” is being polluted every day though carbon neutral or decarbonization is called loudly as catch phrase or propaganda. Remember to see the other side of the truth.  This warning that the Earth has been ever polluted should be continuously issued.
